Graphic design and graphic design education seem generally dedicated to six discernible directions:
1.
To persuade people to buy things they don’t need with money they don’t have to impress others who don’t care.
2.
To persuavesively inform about the class-merits of an artifact, service, or experience.
3.
To package in a wasteful and ecologically indefensible way, artifacts, services, or experiences. (Look at any undertaker’s coffin!)
4.
To provide visual delight or visual catharsis to those classes taught to respond “properly.”
5.
To undo with one hand what the other has done. (Anti-pollution posters, anti-cigarette commercials)
6.
To systematically research the history, present, and future practices in the five fields listed above.
